Survival, stigma, and gender: Unpacking the unspoken realities
Welcome to a space dedicated to exploring the nuanced experiences of homelessness, particularly for women, and the societal narratives that shape these realities. Here, we delve into labeling theory and feminist perspectives to understand the complex interplay of survival, stigma, and gender.

Gender and the hidden face of homelessness
Homelessness is often discussed as a universal experience, yet gender profoundly reshapes its realities. For women on the streets, the challenges extend far beyond a lack of shelter; they encompass constant threats to safety and heightened vulnerability. Every decision becomes a survival strategy, not just for basic needs like food and sleep, but crucially, for avoiding harm in environments men might not experience in the same way.

Survival sex: A harsh reality
For many women experiencing homelessness, survival includes engaging in escorting or "survival sex." While this reality often makes people uncomfortable, research consistently shows its prevalence among homeless women. Studies indicate that many exchange sex for fundamental necessities such as food, shelter, or protection (Flowers, 2010). This highlights a significant connection between homelessness and involvement in street-based sex work, underscoring the extreme measures taken for survival.

Seeking understanding and enlightenment
This blog aims to foster understanding and enlightenment regarding these difficult topics. By exploring personal narratives alongside sociological frameworks like labeling theory and feminist theory, we hope to shed light on the systemic issues and individual experiences that are often overlooked. Our goal is for readers, especially my professor, to gain a deeper, more empathetic perspective on the intersection of homelessness, gender, and survival.
